Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ

On behalf of my family, my wife Taega, our daughters Grace and Hannah, I wish to extend to you all our heartfelt thanks for the wonderful service of welcome last Sunday when I was inducted to be your minister at HXUC. The wonderful meal and fellowship that followed was a great way to conclude a superb worship service. Many people who attended on the day, including members of my immediate and extended family, commented on how meaningful and uplifting the service of Induction and the fellowship time afterwards were for them. It leaves me with no doubt; everyone went away filled with spiritual food as well as physical food. Congratulations to everyone on a job well done!

I come to HXUC fully aware of the diverse nature of the congregation. Examples of diversity are seen in its intergenerational (range of age groups) composition. Other examples of diversity are evident in the many cultures and nationalities as well as the multitude of languages spoken by everyone who calls HXUC their spiritual home. There are many other types of diversity at HXUC, but the question which comes to mind as I consider the diversity in our midst, is, how to hold all of these differences together so they don’t become, as one could put it- a log in the eye? A possible answer to this question may be found in the Gospel text for Sunday. The text is well known because of the transformation, or the transfiguration, which happens to Jesus, hence, today being Transfiguration of Jesus Sunday. Anyway, back to the text-Jesus, Peter, James and John are up on a high mountain. The text goes on to say: While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud, a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him, I am well pleased; listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). Taking the time to ‘listen’ to the other can go a long way towards nurturing an environment of understanding, learning and growth. I will speak a little more on this Transfiguration this morning and the implications for us as followers of Jesus.

I very much look forward to journeying with you to fulfil God’s mission and ministry at HXUC.

Peace, Rev. Faama
